Sporting goods popularity changes colors with the season

LOWER PROVIDENCE — The Schuylkill Valley Sporting Goods store in Audubon has seen a color change in licensed clothing sales this winter.

“It’s totally transformed,” said Tim Carr, the retail manager of Schuylkill Valley Sports, “from red to green. It’s pretty unbelievable.”

Carr has watched as Phillies fans buying red-and white gear have been replaced by Eagles fans purchasing midnight green and white sports gear following last week’s 26-14 win over the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the NFC playoffs.

The Eagles take on the rival New York Giants, the defending Super Bowl champions,

“Up to October, it was sales of Phillies red and now it’s all Eagles green,” he said. “People aren’t crazy about the Eagles like they were years ago. They made the playoffs for (several) in a row.”

Since the arrival of head coach Andy Reid in 1999, the Eagles have been a consistent playoff-level team. They made the NFC playoffs following the 2000 through 2004 seasons, reaching the NFC title game four straight times.

The run was capped off when the Eagles went to Super Bowl XXVIX in and lost to the New England Patriots, 24-21. After a nightmarish 2005 season, the team has made it to the NFC playoffs in 2006 and again this year.

The franchise — which has an appearance in Super Bowl XV following the 1980 season, a 27-10 loss to the Oakland Raiders, to its credit — last won it all in the pre-Super Bowl era in 1960. They also were the NFL Champions in 1948 and 1949.

Carr’s most popular logoed item is the DeSean Jackson (No. 10) adult and youth jerseys. The hotshot rookie wide receiver and return man has become the store’s “top seller.”

Randy Ruck, the president of the chain, started the shop in 1971 and expanded it over the years to 17 locations, with a corporate office in Limerick.

“It’s a dream of everyone to finally get a Super Bowl win,” said Carr. “I was the 1981 baby that missed the 1980 Super Bowl.”

Carr, a self-described “diehard” Eagles fan, was born into a family with Eagles season tickets. He went to Game 4 of the Phillies World Series game in Philadelphia after attending an Eagles/Falcons football game in the afternoon.
